The Franconian International School (FIS) is a not-for-profit association, serving the communities of Herzogenaurach, Nürnberg, Fürth and Erlangen. The FIS is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the members of the FIS Association and the sponsoring companies.

The school opened in September 1998 with grades 1 and 2. Additional grades have been added each year including grade 6 in school year 2002/2003. The school aims to add one grade each year until grade 12.

The FIS relocated to a larger facility in Herzogenaurach in September of 1999. This facility was renovated into a modern school building with several classrooms, a PC lab, a media center, a cafeteria, an art room and a music room. Sports classes take place in a gym on the adidas-Salomon World of Sports site. In the course of expansion the school plans to open a second facility for Middle School students in the fall of 2003.

The FIS operates a full-day program from 09:00 to 15:15, with classes being taught in English, supplemented by regular German lessons. The school provides a full international curriculum which includes a range of subjects with specialized teachers for German, PE, Art, Music and Computers. Spanish is taught from grade 6. The FIS has plans for continued expansion of the academic program culminating in the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

The teaching staff, all fully qualified and experienced teachers, comes from various nations including the US, UK, Germany and Canada. Pupils are taught and given personalized attention according to their age and abilities by 12 full-time and many part-time teachers.

The bilingual FIS Kindergarten opened on the same premises in January 2000 for children aged 4-6 years which encompasses a two year program.

The FIS has a strong extra curricular program including numerous sports and fine arts classes at the appropriate age levels. Additionally, there is an active Parent Teacher Organization.

Admission is available on a year-round basis subject to space availability in each class, and is open to all nationalities without discrimination as to race or religion. Previous school records and personal interviews with parents and students are all part of the admissions process. A Special Needs program is not yet on offer.
